Major?

This time next year I hope to be at a Cal State University and studying as a business major.  I’m not sure what kind of career I want to pursue with it though.  I’ve always been into art and would like to pursue it but, realistically, it would be a lot harder to support myself with a degree in art.  I’ve decided to go in as a business major so I can have something to fall back on.  I’ve thought about double majoring or minoring in art but I’m not sure if I would be taking on too much pressure doing that.

  1. In my opinion, I think majoring in business is a smart choice. I also think that it would be very resourceful if you minored in art, especially if you are planning to make a career out of it. Majoring in business would help you to make a career out of something that you love and enjoy, whether it would be owning your own art store, selling your work online, starting up your own t-shirt design company, etc. Minoring in art would help expand your creativity, in addition to improving your skills as a potential artist. All in all, college is going to be stressful no matter what, but what's important to realize is that you should be studying something that you truly enjoy and that you feel will pave the pathway to your dream job.

  2. Going of what Jasmine said being minoring in art would help you become a better artist than you already are. Being an artist is hard Halla but if you truly want to be an artist then be an artist! You need to enjoy something that you're going to major in. Dont major into something that you're not going to enjoy at all. Thats why we go to college to pursue what we want to be. Yes its good to having something to fall back on but if you're not going to enjoy what you're studying then whats the point of going to school. Go pursue what you love Halla!

  3. Adding to what has already been said, selecting art as your minor could be beneficial in the long run. As far as pressure goes, it will sort of just depend on how demanding your classes are and how quickly you plan to complete your schooling. If you want to get done quicker, adding in a minor on top of business will add more credits to your schedule so you would have to see if it’s something you could manage. If anything, maybe look into the minor after your first year so that you feel more comfortable with the flow of college. Good luck!

  4. I agree with Jasmine with the thought that majoring in business is a good route and the benefits that come with it after obtaining the degree. In my opinion it would be the safest choice that you know will get you somewhere later on. Art could always be a passion that you could work on and if later on in the road someone sees your work and likes it, you may get a big break. You dont have to give up a dream just because you're growing up. Art could always be something you can focus on and do as a side business but for college reasons you should apply under a major that would get you somewhere after graduating college.

  5. Double majoring would indeed be a very difficult task and probably stress a person out if time is not managed well. Having a major to fall back is a really smart decision if you decide on majoring in art considering that a degree in art would not support a stable financial income. However, I believe you should pursue in what you most desire in life and enjoy it as much as you can. I hope you can find the equal balance between fun and work. I wish you all the best !

  6. You are a great artist, so it's easy to see why you are on the fence about pursuing your craft. Making art your minor will allow you to still further your skill and pursuing your interest while you learning about something that will support you until you can really get started in your art career. On the flip side, if you choose to major in art and minor in a different field, it will still somewhat have the same effect. You can do what you love in tandem with studying what will be a good support system for you in the future. While I advise that you shouldn't put your art on the back burner, it is ultimately your choice, luckily one that you can change as you continue through college. - Maya Washington
